Caspar Frederik Harsdorff (born May 26, 1735 in Copenhagen , † May 24, 1799 in Frederiksberg ) was an architect of Danish classicism .

Life

Caspar Frederik Harsdorff studied with the French architect Nicolas-Henri Jardin at the newly founded Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen ( Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi ), which opened in 1754 in Charlottenborg Palace . In 1756 he was the first Dane to win the Academy’s Grand Gold Medal for designing a city gate, which was accompanied by a six-year travel grant. So Harsdorff traveled to Paris in 1757 , where he spent the next four years with Jacques-François Blondel , an architect of King Louis XV. , could train. In 1762 he traveled on to Rome and got to know the classic at one of its origins.

Returned to Denmark in 1764, Harsdorff became a member of the academy in 1765. Here he taught - after he had won another competition - since 1766. In 1771 he succeeded his teacher Jardin Professor of Architecture at the Academy, whose director he was 1777-79. His students included:

  • 1773: Decoration of the gardens at Rosenborg Castle , in particular the Hercules Pavilion.
  • 1773–74: Expansion of the Royal Theater at Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen; associated with this was the approval between the theater and Charlottenborg Palace - as the seat of the academy - to build a private home for himself and his family.
  • 1774–79: funerary chapels for the kings Christian VI. and Frederik V in Roskilde Cathedral ; however, the work was stopped due to lack of money and only completed in 1820-25 by his student CF Hansen.
