Cassville is a municipality (with the status " Village ") in Grant County in the US -amerikanischen State Wisconsin . In 2010 , Cassville had 947 residents.

history

The first settlement was founded in 1827 and named after Lewis Cass , the governor of the then Michigan Territory . After the formation of the Wisconsin Territory in 1836, Cassville was shortlisted for the possible capitals of the territory, which then stretched from Lake Michigan to Missouri . But when Madison was promoted to the capital of the area, a number of land speculators in Cassville went bankrupt.

Then when Nelson Dewey , who came to Cassville in 1836 and later became the first governor of Wisconsin , bought a large part of the area around the settlement in the hope that Cassville would develop into a large city and that the land there would bring large profits would. So the further settlement was promoted. Dewey also acquired Stonefield, a property near the city that is now a Wisconsin State Historic Site . Dewey couldn't hold onto it for long as it was destroyed by fire in 1873 and financial failures soon forced him to sell his property.

Cassville did not become the metropolis Dewey envisioned. Today the city is known for Nelson Dewey State Park and the ferry to Iowa .
