Catarino Tafoya (born January 12, 1940 in La Piedad , Michoacán , † November 3, 2012 in Ciudad Madero , Tamaulipas ), also known by the nickname El Cata , was a Mexican football player in the position of a striker and later football coach .
career
Tafoya learned to play football at Club La Concepción , an amateur club from the Barrio La Purísima in his hometown of La Piedad. He received his first professional contract in 1957 with city rivals Reboceros de La Piedad playing in the second division . In 1959 he moved to league rivals Refinería Madero , with whom he always played for promotion in the next few years, but always narrowly missed the goal of the first division. Therefore, he accepted the offer from Atlas Guadalajara to play for this in the 1962/63 season in the Primera División . After a year he moved to city rivals Club Deportivo Oro and again a year later Tafoya returned to Ciudad Madero, where he played for the club that is now CF Ciudad Madero . The club did not lose a single game in the 1964/65 season and won the second division championship eight points ahead of the Petroleros de Poza Rica . In addition, Tafoya achieved his personal success as the Segunda División's top scorer in the same season . In the two following seasons Tefayo was represented with the Orinegros in the top division and played after relegation from 1967 another season in the second division before he ended his active career at the age of 28.
Tafoyo then worked as a coach at the clubs UAT Correcaminos and Club Deportivo Tampico, which are also based in the state of Tamaulipas , but kept his center of life in Ciudad Madero until his death.

The correctness of his affiliation to Ciudad Madero (instead of Tampico) in the seasons 1965/66 and 1966/67 can also be seen from the team line- ups that can be read in this report: Fútbol sin compromisos: Los Orinegros de Ciudad Madero (Spanish; article from 25 .
