Life

Career start

Celia Kaye was born on February 24, 1942 in the city of Carthage in the US state of Missouri as the daughter of chemical engineer John W. Burkholder and his wife Kathryn, who ran a private preschool, and was subsequently baptized under the name Celia Kay Burkholder. Friends and family always called her by her middle name, Kay. Her ancestors include Germans and Cherokee . When she was a year old, the small family moved to Wilmington , Delaware , known as the Chemical Capital of the World . Her younger brother Johnny was also born here. After attending the Henry C. Conrad High School near Wilmington, which no longer exists in its former form , which she finished in 1959, she subsequently graduated from the Philadelphia Modeling and Charm School . Then she worked as a model . Already during her school days she worked on theater productions and was a member of the National Thespian Society .

During her time in Wilmington, she was trained in ballet and tap dance for five years from the age of five , and learned the piano for five years and the organ for two years . She ventured her beginnings in the acting field in local theater productions such as Brigadoon or Of Thee I Sing . During her high school years she was also active in sports and was a member of the tennis and swimming teams of the sports department of her high school. She was also a competitive swimmer and diver for three years at Wilmington Swim Club , with whom she toured the Middle East of the United States. Furthermore, Burkholder, who learned to swim at the age of three, was already a trained lifeguard ( Red Cross Lifesaver ) at that time , as well as a trainer and lifeguard at Valleybrook Swim Club . After graduating from high school, she moved to California in 1959 , where the then 17-year-old trained as an actress at the Pasadena Playhouse . Before that, she had attended a summer semester of theater that same year, after which she received a scholarship. By the time she graduated from the Pasadena Playhouse in June 1961, she had worked in around 20 theater and television productions at the theater.

First appearances in film and television

Shortly thereafter, she made her first notable appearance in film and television when she starred in an episode of the Western series Wells Fargo in 1962 . In the same year she received a recurring role as Marnie Massey , the eldest of seven daughters of Christine Massey (played by Loretta Young ), on The New Loretta Young Show . Shortly before that, James Mason's daughter Portland , who was originally intended for the role, was eliminated from the cast of the series. She was seen in at least 15 episodes from 1962 to 1963 and was also trained in modern jazz dance at Eugene Loring's American School of Dance in Hollywood and was also an evening student at Los Angeles City College , where she studied child psychology studied. The series was discontinued after only one aired season due to a lack of success; Celia Kaye had previously signed a five-year deal with the show. After appearing in two episodes of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet in 1963, she was cast in the role of Karana , main character in Island of the Blue Dolphins , a film adaptation of the novel of the same name , due to her athleticism and appearance . For her role in the film, which was shot on a relatively small budget in Northern California within five weeks , Kaye received a Golden Globe nomination in the category "Best New Actress" . At the presentation of the Golden Globe Awards in 1965 , Mia Farrow (for her portrayal in Shots in Batasi ) and Mary Ann Mobley (for Get Yourself a College Girl ) two other young actresses were nominated in the same category ; in the end, all three were awarded the prize. Furthermore, she was nominated for a Laurel Award that year . At the time, she lived in a room above a garage in Malibu Beach and drove a light blue MGA .

About six months after the premiere of Island of the Blue Dolphins , Kaye starred in the role of Ann Shelby in the eleventh episode of the eighth season of the western series Wagon Train , which first aired on ABC on December 6, 1964 . When there were no further engagements in the following months, Kaye wanted to travel through Europe and possibly continue her college career afterwards. Through Bob Raditz , the producer of Island of the Blue Dolphins , she met Al Ruddy , a producer colleague, who hired her for his next film production. At the side of Michael Parks she then worked in the female lead role of Daphne in the dramatic love story Wild Seed in 1965, directed by Brian G. Hutton . One of the main reasons for the commitment was that Kaye, unlike most women of her age in Hollywood, relied less on glamor and more on her naturalness, which exactly fitted into Ruddy's image of the main female character for his film. Also in 1965 she starred as Sally Brighton in Fluffy directed by Earl Bellamy .

Career end after only a brief climax

After that it was not until 1967 before Kaye was hired for further productions. In 1967 she was seen as Melissa Neal in a two-part episode of Bruce Lee - The Secret of the Green Hornet , as well as in one episode each of the western series Iron Horse and Thoughtful Tales . In the 1970s, her short career as an actress was already fading; there were mostly only guest appearances in one episode of various television series or short appearances in film productions. It was nowhere near enough for leading roles. In the role of Helen Nudavik she appeared in 1970 in an episode of the ABC series The Young Lawyers and 1972 she worked in the Blaxploitation - low-budget film The Final Comedown , the heyday of blaxploitation films, as Renee Freeman with. In 1973 she appeared in the first episode of the short-lived ABC series Adams Kesse Rippe and was seen in the television film Gate of Darkness by director John Newland in the same year . She then played Willa Sweeney in Our Little Farm (1 episode, 1974) and Sabina Caddo in Police Story (1 episode, 1975). In 1976 she was featured in the infamous bathtub scene in Operation Rattlesnake ; In 1978 she played the bride of Sam Melville's portrayed character Bear in the surf film Decision Day . That same year Kaye had married John Milius , the film's director and screenwriter.

After that, things became largely quiet about the former young actress, whose mother died on January 31, 1981 at the age of 67. In 1982 she was seen as the high priestess in Conan the Barbarian and in 1988 in the role of Sandra in the horror film LA Midnight . She was one of the producers of her daughter Amanda Milius ' short film The Lotus Gun , which she had with John Milius, from whom she divorced in later years, from 2015. The parents received special thanks from their daughter in the credits of the film. Also in 2015, she made another notable appearance when she appeared as Rose in the web series Class by the directors Steven Caple junior and Tarik Jackson . She also worked alongside her daughter and her ex-husband in the 2013 documentary Milius . In the summer of 2019, she took part in the fifth episode of the Chris Culvenor- created competition show Holey Moley on ABC and lost in the first round to Dianne Cullen, who was around 15 years her junior.
