Centurian is a Dutch death metal band from Putten that was formed in 1997. In the meantime the band also called itself Nox .

history

Established as a Centurian

The band was formed in January 1997 by drummer Wim van der Valk and guitarist Rob Oorthuis after their band Inquisitor split up. A short time later, singer Seth van de Loo joined the cast, whereupon the first appearances began in May of the same year. Later the band released a first demo with Of Purest Fire . In early 1998 bassist Patrick Boley joined the cast after the group won a record deal with Full Moon Productions through their demo . In April the demo was re-released as an EP on the label . The release was followed by appearances with Krisiun , Marduk , God Dethroned and Sinister before their debut album, Choronzonic Chaos Gods , was released in 1999 . In the summer of that year, the band played overseas for the first time at the Milwaukee Metal Fest . The following year the band separated from Full Moon Productions and then signed a contract for three albums with Listenable Records . In 2000, the band controlled a cover version of the Morbid Angel song Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost for the compilation Scream Forth Blasphemy - A Tribute to Morbid Angel , which was released on Dwell Records . While the band was working on their second album, drummer van der Walk and guitarist Oorthuis decided to continue the project without singer van de Loo and bassist Patrick Boley. Three weeks later, bassist and singer Jerry Brouwer joined the band as a new member. A short time later, Oskar van Paradijs joined the group as another guitarist. Then began the recordings for the album Liber ZarZax , before it was released in September 2001 of the same year. In the spring of 2002 there followed appearances in the opening act on Vader's tour through Ireland and Great Britain .

Renaming to Nox

In December 2001, guitarist Oorthuis and drummer Bob Dussel decided to rename the band Nox; the Centurian occupation was disbanded in 2002. Together with singer Seth van de Loo and bassist Patrick Boley, the band released their first EP with Zazaz in 2003. Among other things, it featured the song Signed in Blood , whereupon Helena Iren Michaelsen could be heard as a guest singer. The band then signed a contract with Wicked World Records before the album Ixaxaar was recorded in June 2005 , although it was only released in February 2007. In 2006 singer van de Loo and drummer Dussel left the band. The latter returned to the band in 2008, while Niels Adams ( Prostitute Disfigurement ) acted as the new singer. Bassist Boley has since been replaced by Oskar van Paradijs, who previously worked as a guitarist for Centurian. In 2010 she joined the EP Blood, Bones and Ritual Death on Listenable Records. Shortly before the release, Dussel left the band again, so singer Seth van de Loo returned to the band, this time taking the post of drummer. Patrick Boleij returned to the band as bass player.

Return to the name Centurian

Since the band, which had played under the name Nox together with groups such as Antaeus , Nifelheim , Deströyer 666 and The Devil's Blood , now largely consisted of the old Centurian line-up, the group decided to return to their original line-up in 2010 Return name. This was followed by appearances in Europe and Brazil in 2011 . Then the band recorded the next album Contra Rationem , which was released in January 2013 on Listenable Records .

style

The debut album Choronzonic Chaos Gods can be classified between bands like Deicide and Morbid Angel , whereby the playing of the instruments is technically demanding and the use of double bass is characteristic. Similarities to the two bands mentioned can also be heard on the second album Liber ZarZax . Under the name Nox, the band also played technically demanding death metal, but not so demanding that the album Ixaxxar could be "put in the technical death metal corner". The guttural singing is reminiscent of Glen Benton . On their album Contra Rationem the band plays Death Metal, which is mainly reminiscent of the early works of Morbid Angel.
