Cesare Poma (born March 21, 1862 in Biella ; † February 16, 1932 ibid) was an Italian diplomat , numismatist and historian .

life and work

Poma came from a family of textile entrepreneurs, his father was the owner of the cotton mill of the same name . After the early death of the father, his mother encouraged him and his brother Luigi to study classical music. He attended the Real Collegio Carlo Alberto di Moncalieri from 1868 to 1880. He then enrolled for a law degree at the University of Turin , which he graduated on July 7, 1884. After the selection exams on April 5, 1885, he was accepted into the consular career.

He worked as a diplomat in Izmir , Rio de Janeiro , New York City , Boston , New Orleans , San Francisco , Campinas , Cardiff , Florianopolis , Belo Horizonte , Johannesburg and Liverpool . From August 1, 1901 to May 1904, he was the first consul of the Italian Concession in Tientsin (now Tianjin ). There he published the first Italian newspaper to be printed in China . The newspaper was written in Italian, English and Chinese, and five editions were published.

In 1910 he gave up his diplomatic career and retired to Biella to devote himself to historical studies and linguistics. He mainly published books and articles on local history. He was a member of various historical and cultural associations.

Archives and personal library

The "Cesare Poma" collection is in the Biella City Library. Other documents are in the Biella State Archives. The collection of magazines, around 1400 in different languages, is in the Vatican Apostolic Library .

Honors

On December 27, 1896 he was made Knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy .
