The Challabamba District is located in the Paucartambo Province in the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of 714 km². The 2017 census counted 9,546 residents. In 1993 the population was 8,621, in 2007 it was 9,983. The district administration is located in the town of Challabamba with 1205 inhabitants (as of 2017) at an altitude of 2,820 m on the eastern bank of the Río Paucartambo (Río Yavero ). Challabamba is 12.5 km north of the provincial capital Paucartambo and 50 km northeast of the regional capital Cusco .
Geographical location
The Challabamba district is located in the Andes in the west of the Paucartambo province. The Río Paucartambo flows through the district in a northerly direction.
The Challabamba district is bordered to the west by the districts Calca and Lares , on the north by the district Yanatile , on the east by the district Kosñipata and on the south by the districts of Paucartambo and Colquepata .
