San Pedro de Challacollo (or short Challacollo ) is a town in the department of Oruro in the highlands of the South American Andes -state Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

San Pedro de Challacollo is the central place of the canton Challacollo in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) El Choro in the province of Cercado and is located at an altitude of 3714  m in the river valley of the Río Desaguadero , which flows southeast of the village into the Uru-Uru Lake .

San Pedro de Challacollo is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano in front of the Cordillera Azanaques , which is part of the Cordillera Central mountain range . The climate is a typical time of day climate in which the mean temperature fluctuations during the day are greater than during the year.

The annual average temperature of the region is around 8 ° C (see climate diagram Poopó) and fluctuates between 3 ° C in June and July and 11 ° C from November to March. The annual precipitation is around 350 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and significant precipitation only from December to March with 50 to 90 mm monthly precipitation.

Transport network

Challacollo is located at a distance of 27 kilometers by road southwest of Oruro , the capital of the department.

From Oruro, the 279 kilometer long highway Ruta 12 leads in a south-westerly direction to Challacollo and from there via Toledo , Huachacalla and Sabaya to Pisiga on the Chilean border. The Ruta 12 crosses the Río Desaguadero four kilometers southwest of Challacollo .

Due to the historical population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of El Choro 83.1 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
