It appeared in February 1951 after Hermann-Holbein-Fahrzeugbau had already built some pre -series vehicles in May 1950 . In December 1952, Rheinische Automobil-Fabrik, Hennhöfer & Co. OHG took over production, which ended in May 1953. Successor who was Champion 400 H .

Chassis and body

Compared to the pre-production model, the chassis had to be changed because the main supplier Benteler wanted to deliver as many parts as possible. The changes made the vehicle more rear-heavy, which also affected the road holding, cornering stability and suspension properties. The Champion 400 had a central tubular frame with a welded body, double wishbones at the front and an oscillating axle at the rear, each with rubber torsion springs, and rack and pinion steering. Telescopic shock absorbers were available from 1952 at an extra charge. Drum brakes front and rear with a total braking area of 310 cm² were operated hydraulically. The two-door sheet steel body in the form of a convertible sedan offered space for two people. Drauz from Heilbronn made them. A special feature were the semicircular side windows with panes that were not sunk but rotated on an axis perpendicular to the direction of travel.

mass and weight

With a wheelbase of 180 cm and a track width of 120 cm, the vehicle length was 318 cm, the vehicle width 147 cm and the vehicle height 130 cm. The curb weight was 495 kg, the permissible total weight 750 kg.

drive

The engine had to be exchanged compared to the pre-production model, as the previous supplier no longer wanted to deliver Triumph without guarantees. The water-cooled two - cylinder two - stroke flat piston engine from ILO had a displacement of 398 cm³ and developed 14 hp (10.2 kW) at 4000 rpm; the maximum torque was 2.8 mkp (27 Nm) at 2800 rpm. It was installed in the rear of the vehicle and powered the rear axle via a three-speed gearbox with center shift. The top speed was stated at 85 km / h, the fuel consumption at 4.5 liters per 100 km.

The new price was initially 3750 DM , from July 1952 3995 DM. 1904 Champion 400 were built between February 1951 and May 1953.
