C. Kumar N. Patel

Chandra Kumar N. Patel (born July 2, 1938 in Baramati ) is an Indian electrical engineer and physicist who deals with laser physics and was a pioneer in the development of gas lasers .

Life

Patel studied at the University of Pune ( bachelor's degree from the College of Engineering Pune as an electrical engineer in telecommunications in 1958) and at Stanford University , where he received his master's degree in 1959 and received his doctorate in electrical engineering with Dean Watson in 1961 (on microwave electronics). From 1961 he was at Bell Laboratories , where he developed the carbon dioxide laser and other gas lasers. From 1967 he headed the Infrared Physics and Electronic Research Department, from 1970 the Electronic Research Department and 1976 to 1980 the Physical Sciences Laboratory. From 1985 to 1993 he was also on the Board of Trustees of the parent company ATT. In 1993 he moved from Bell Laboratories, where he was most recently Executive Director Research Materials Science Engineering and Academic Affairs Division, to the University of California, Los Angeles , as Vice Chancellor for Research. Since 2000 he has been professor of physics there.

In addition to the development of the carbon dioxide laser in 1964 (the first continuous high-power laser that found numerous applications), he made important contributions to molecular spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, the use of the laser in surgery, in the military and in the detection of environmental pollution (early 1970s with Raman lasers). He also developed tunable lasers early on, first with the help of the Zeeman effect in gas lasers, which, however, were of limited use in practice, then via stimulated Raman scattering on a semiconductor in a magnetic field, with which Patel and Earl D. Shaw the first tunable laser in 1969 developed in the infrared range ( spin flip Raman laser , SFR laser), which Patel and colleagues then used to study substances with very low concentrations in the atmosphere.

In 1998 he received the Frederic Ives Medal , in 1996 the National Medal of Science and in 1988 the George E. Pake Prize of the American Physical Society , of which he was President in 1995. In 1988 he received an honorary doctorate from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He received the Adolph Lomb Medal from the Optical Society of America , the Zworykin Award from the National Association of Engineers , the Ballentine Medal from the Franklin Institute , the Lamme Medal from the IEEE, and the 1989 IEEE Medal of Honor . He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (since 1974), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1976) and the National Academy of Engineering . He is an external member of the Indian National Science Academy and the Third World Academy of Sciences .
