Charles Edward Mansfield

Sir Charles Edward Mansfield , KCMG (born October 11, 1828 - August 1, 1907 in Florence ) was a British diplomat .

Mansfield was the youngest of five sons of nine siblings. He joined the British Army and acquired on September 1, 1848 an officer post as Ensign of the 33rd Regiment of Foot . He fought from 1853 to 1856 in the Crimean War and in 1857 in the Sepoy Uprising . In 1831 he was promoted to lieutenant , in 1854 to captain and in 1858 to major .

On June 13, 1859, he married Annie Eliza Margaret Ellis in Marylebone , London.

In 1865 he was sent to Warsaw (then Russia ) as the British Consul General and in 1869 he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel . In 1876, Mansfield was sent to Bucharest as the British Consul General of the united principalities of Moldova and Wallachia . Although the principalities of Moldova and Wallachia were already united to form the state of Romania , international recognition did not take place until 1878. The British Queen appointed him consul general in Romania in October 1877. After serving in Bucharest, he was in 1878, he was appointed Brevet - Colonel transported and half-pay released from active military service.

On June 7, 1878, he was sent to Bogotá ( Colombia ) as Prime Minister . Subsequently, in 1881, he was appointed British Prime Minister and Consul General in Venezuela . In 1887 he became British Consul General in Peru . In the same year he was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in recognition of his services . He was retired in 1894 and lived in Florence, where he died in 1907.
