He worked as an assistant doctor at McGill University and Harvard University before moving to London in 1958 as a research assistant to Charles Dent and Harry Harris . In 1961, Scriver moved back to McGill University, where he founded the deBelle Laboratory for Human Biochemical Genetics, a research facility at Montreal Children's Hospital at McGill University Health Center . In 1969 he received a professorship for paediatrics , and in 1978 for human genetics . Most recently, he also held professorships for biochemistry and biology . In 2009, Scriver retired.
Scriver has been married to Esther Pierce since 1956. The couple have four children.
Act
Scriver has made a significant contribution to the detection and treatment of congenital metabolic disorders . Scriver's early work focused primarily on transport systems for amino acids and phosphates, as well as the hereditary diseases caused by disorders of these systems. He later obtained vitamin D fortification of dairy products to prevent rickets in Canada and installed programs for the early detection of phenylketonuria and other congenital metabolic disorders in newborns ( newborn screening ). Further work dealt with the population genetics of Canada and bioinformatics .
