Charles Thomas (born June 23, 1790 in New Castle County , Delaware , † February 8, 1848 ibid) was an American politician and governor of the state of Delaware from 1823 to 1824 .

Life

Early years and political advancement

Charles Thomas studied law at Princeton University after elementary school . In 1813 he was admitted to the bar. In 1817 he was elected to the Delaware House of Representatives as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . From 1821 he was a member of the State Senate , of which he became President in 1823.

Governor of Delaware and further résumé

When the incumbent governor Joseph Haslet died in his office on June 23, 1823, Thomas had to take over his office in accordance with the state constitution. So he was between June 23, 1823 and January 20, 1824 governor of his state. During this time he continued the policy of his predecessor. Governor Thomas paid particular attention to improving the school system and reforming the prison system. After the end of his tenure, he withdrew from politics and into his private life. Charles Thomas died in February 1848. He and his wife, Eliza Stoops, had their daughter, Eliza, who lived from 1820 to 1898.
