Charles Townshend, 1st Baron Bayning (born August 27, 1728 - May 19, 1810 ), was a British peer and politician.

Life

He was the son of the Hon. William Townshend (1702–1738) from his marriage to Henrietta Powlett (1705–1755). His father was the third son of Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend .

He was at Eton College educated and completed his studies in 1749 at Clare College of Cambridge University as a Master of Arts from. In 1751 he was secretary to the British ambassador to Spain .

From 1756 to 1786 and from 1790 to 1796 he was a member of the British House of Commons as an MP for the Borough of Yarmouth in Norfolk .

In 1765 he held the office of Lord of the Admiralty , from 1770 to 1777 that of Lord of the Treasury and from 1777 to 1782 that of Joint Vice-Treasurer for Ireland . In 1777 he was admitted to Privy Council and in 1783 he was temporarily Treasurer of the Navy .

On October 20, 1797 he was raised as Baron Bayning , of Foxley in the County of Berks , in the Peerage of Great Britain and thereby became a member of the House of Lords .

Marriage and offspring

He married his cousin Annabella Powlett-Smyth, daughter of Reverend Richard Smyth, Anglican pastor of Myddle, Shropshire . Both spouses were maternal grandsons of Lord William Powlett (1666–1729), younger son of Charles Paulet, 1st Duke of Bolton . With her he had two sons who successively succeeded him as Barone Bayning in 1810 and 1823 and in 1821 and 1823 respectively changed their surnames after a heirloom on his mother's side:
