The municipality of Charny was founded on January 1, 2016 with 13 other municipalities, namely Chambeugle , Malicorne , Chêne-Arnoult , Chevillon , Dicy , Fontenouilles , Grandchamp , Marchais-Beton , Perreux , Prunoy , Saint-Denis-sur-Ouanne , Saint-Martin -sur-Ouanne , Villefranche merged to form the Commune nouvelle Charny Orée de Puisaye. The municipality of Charny belonged to the arrondissement of Auxerre and the canton of Charny .
