history
The origins of Chertsey lie in the Chertsey monastery founded in 666 by the Bishop of London, Eorcenwald . This gave Chertsey the nickname "The historical town of Chertsey" (the historical town of Chertsey). A settlement developed around the monastery, from which today's town developed.
It was destroyed by the Danes in the 9th century and re-established by King Edgard of England in 946. Chertsey Bridge , built between 1783–1785, is still the main link across the river today.
