The River Cherwell [ˈt͡ʃɑːwɛɫ] is a 40 mile long river that flows through the heart of England . It is one of the great tributaries of the Thames .

The Cherwell rises in the Ironstone Hills near Hellidon , three kilometers west of Charwelton near Daventry . The general direction of flow of the river is north to south. It flows through Northamptonshire for about 15 kilometers before flowing through the county of Oxfordshire to the mouth at Oxford , which is divided into two arms .

Between Cropredy and Thrupp , the Cherwell has been part of the Oxford Canal since the end of the 18th century . This largely artificial waterway connects the Thames to the Coventry Canal .

Headwaters

Immediately north of the source is Helidon Hill , which is also a watershed . On the south side the water feeds the Cherwell, and with it the Thames, which flows into the North Sea; on the north side, the water feeds the River Leam , which flows into the River Avon and flows over the River Severn into the Bristol Channel , a bay in the Atlantic Ocean .
