Church of St. Michael in Chichy

Chichy (German Kunzendorf or Cunzendorf ) is a village in the rural community Małomice in the powiat Żagański in the Lubusz Voivodeship in Poland . It is located around 6 km northwest of the center of the city of Szprotawa .

geography

Chichy extends to the west of a small, right-hand Bober tributary, which was formerly known as Girbigsbach or Cunzendorfer Bach. Together with Johnsdorf (today Janowiec ) east of the brook , Cunzendorf basically formed a typical forest hoof village around 5 km long . For a long time, however, the two villages were separated by the border between the Duchy of Sagan in the west and the Duchy of Glogau in the east, which ran directly to the east of the river . State road 12 runs south of Chichy today . To the south of the road, the Girbigsbach flows through the Łódź – Forst (Lausitz) and Bobrzany ( Girbigsdorf ) railway lines , before it turns southwest and flows into the Bober.

history

From the 14th to the 16th century, the village of Cunzendorf, together with Johnsdorf and Girbigsdorf, belonged to a von Nechern family who built the moated castle Johnsdorf in the south of Johnsdorf after 1543 . Seifried von Nechern sold the three villages together with Kortnitz to the east to Dietrich von Kittlitz on Mallmitz . Further owners were the noble families von Stentsch and from 1701 von Knobelsdorff . The latter rebuilt Cunzendorf Castle around 1733 to its present form. From 1840 until his death in 1871 Fabian zu Dohna-Schlodien was lord of the castle at Cunzendorf, then his son-in-law Oskar von Diebitsch and, after his death, Hans von Diebitzsch (1865–1945), who in 1898 was Clementine zu Dohna-Mallmitz (1873–1936) got married.

As a result of the district reform in 1820, Cunzendorf was detached from the Sagan district and became part of the Sprottau district . After the war ended in 1945, Cunzendorf fell to Poland and was renamed Chichy . The German population was expelled. As a result, Chichy became part of the municipality (Gmina) Małomice and with this again incorporated into the district (Powiat) Żagański.

Cunzendorf Castle

The castle in what was then Nieder Cunzendorf was built after 1718 for Christoph von Knobelsdorff as a two-storey rectangular building. Further conversions in the neoclassical style were carried out around 1850 by Fabian zu Dohna-Schlodien. In 1970 the castle was renovated. It is currently privately owned and is also home to the Chichy Art Academy .
