description

Vegetative characteristics

Leaves and flowers of Chilopsis linearis

Chilopsis linearis is a shrub or small tree with a height of 2 to 9 m. The young trunks and twigs stand upright-ascending, the young twigs are short-bristled with protruding, 0.1 to 0.3 (rarely 0.05 to 0.4) mm long trichomes and are covered with isolated fine scales near the nodes .

The leaves stand upright, mostly alternate or occasionally partially opposite or in whorls . They are simple, linear-lanceolate, usually 5.5 to 9 (rarely 4 to 12.5) cm long and 4 to 10 (rarely 2.8 to 10) mm wide. They are covered with fine, glandular scales and especially at the base and along the midrib and the edges with trichomes.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences are wire-haired to densely tomentose-haired panicles . The calyx of the flowers is split into two parts near the base, 10 to 15 (rarely only 8.5) mm long and finely hairy. The outside and the corolla lobes of the crown are colored lavender-pink to strong magenta. The crown is tubular-bell-shaped and is 4 to 5.5 (rarely 3 to 6) cm long. The outside of the crown is hairless, the inside is hairy above the starting points of the stamens with short glandular trichomes and in the rest of the crown throat and the lower parts of the corolla lobes with flexible, multicellular and 1 to 3 mm long trichomes.

The four stamens occur in two pairs of different lengths. The dust bags consist of two counters standing apart. The pollen grains appear in tetrads. In addition to the stamens, a 4 to 10 mm long and sometimes with a stunted anther staminodium is formed. The ovary is conical-cylindrical in shape and covered with fine, glandular scales. It stands on a bowl-shaped, pillow-shaped flower base that is 0.3 mm high and 1 mm wide.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are linear, round capsules , 13 to 32 cm long and 5 to 7 (rarely 4.5 to 8.5) mm wide and contain a flat, 2 to 4 mm wide septum. The seeds are provided at each end with solitary or at the base partially fused, single-celled trichomes that form a kind of wing. The seeds are thin, 6 to 12 mm long and 4 to 5 cm wide.

distribution

The species is found in northern Mexico in the Chihuahua and Sonora deserts , as well as in the southwest of the United States.

Systematics

The species is occasionally divided into different varieties based on the roundness of the leaves and the hairiness. The division into two subspecies given here, one of which is divided into two varieties, follows the revision of Henrickson (1985):

  • Chilopsis linearis subsp. linearis var. linearis : It occurs in Texas, New Mexico and northeastern Mexico.
  • Chilopsis linearis subsp. linearis var. tomenticaulis Henrickson : It occurs in the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo León and Coahuila.
  • Chilopsis linearis subsp. arcuata (Fosberg) Henrickson : It occurs in Arizona, Nevada, Utah, California and in the Mexican state of Sonora and in Baja California.
