Chlorobenzilate is a chemical compound from the group of benzilic acids that is used as an acaricide .
Extraction and presentation
Chlorobenzilate can be obtained from toluene , which is chlorinated and then reacts with sodium hydroxide to form 4-chlorobenzaldehyde . This reacts with sodium cyanide and ethanol to form 4,4'-dichlorobenzoin , which reacts with nitric acid to form 4,4'-dichlorobenzil . Reaction with potassium hydroxide and ethanol or diethyl sulfate now gives the end product.
