character
The small mountain range is about 25 km long, 4 to 10 km wide and strongly indented. It does not have a uniform main ridge. The summit regions are rocky; the highest point is the Veľký Choč ( 1611 m nm ).
The crystalline mountain core does not rise to the surface, which is formed by sedimented Mesozoic rocks. Geologically, the mountains represent a transition area between the Little and Big Fatra on the one hand and the Western Tatras on the other.
The type of rock favored the formation of numerous karst phenomena. You can find carts , sinkholes and caves, the most famous of which is Liskovská jaskyňa east of Ružomberok .
The region is predominantly forested; coniferous forests dominate (especially spruce). At higher altitudes, larger areas are covered with mountain pines .
