Chris White

Chris White (born July 6, 1936 in New York City , † November 2, 2014 ) was an American jazz bassist .

White performed occasionally with Cecil Taylor in the 1950s . From 1960 to 1961 he accompanied the singer Nina Simone . Then he was a member of Dizzy Gillespie's band until 1966 . In 1963 he made recordings with Gillespie's saxophonist James Moody . He later led his own band The Jazz Survivors and was a member of the group Prism . He has also worked with Billy Taylor , Eubie Blake , Earl Hines , Chick Corea , Teddy Wilson , Kenny Barron , Mary Lou Williams , Duke Ellington , Sarah Vaughan , Carmen McRae and Billy Cobham , among others . In 1976 he participated in the Wildflowers Loft Sessions . In the field of jazz he was involved in over 80 recording sessions from 1960.

In 1992 his album The Chris White Project was released (with Cecil Brooks III , Jimmy Ponder , Cassandra Wilson , Grachan Moncur III , Steve Nelson , Keith Copeland , Marvin Horne , Steve Kroon , Michael Raye ). White was the first director of the New York Jazzmobile project , first director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, and teaches at Bloomfield College in New Jersey . White also developed a music notation system and worked as an editor for Da Capo Press and Black Perspective In Music magazine . He earned a Masters in Music Education from the University of Massachusetts .
