Christchurch was a district ( English district ) in the English county of Dorset with the title of a borough . The administrative seat was the city of Christchurch .

Christchurch was formed with the entry into force of the Local Government Act 1972 on April 1, 1974 by the merger of the Municipal Borough of Christchurch with areas of the Rural District Ringwood and Fordingbridge : the parish ( Parish ) Hurn and parts of Christchurch East and Sopley; in addition, the district, the area of which had previously belonged to the county of Hampshire , moved to Dorset. At the same time, the district was awarded the title of borough.

Due to an ordinance issued in May 2018, Christchurch was merged with the north-west adjacent Unitary Authority Bournemouth and Poole to form the new UA Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole on April 1, 2019 . The Christchurch Council had sued this merger, but was unsuccessful.

Inner structure, unparished area in red.

Within the district there were two parishes, Hurn in the north and Burton in the northwest, both in the sparsely populated areas. The more densely populated urban area with Christchurch itself was an unparished area . This means that there was no parish council here either, the tasks assigned to the parishes were carried out by the district administration.
