West Dorset was a district in the county of Dorset in England until 2019 . The administrative seat was the city of Dorchester . Neighboring were North Dorset and Purbeck in the east and Weymouth and Portland in the south, all of which were part of Dorset, as well as East Devon in the west and South Somerset in the north. The south-west and south-east borders formed the coast of the English Channel .
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and resulted from the merger of the boroughs Bridport, Dorchester and Lyme Regis, the Urban District Sherborne and the Rural Districts Beaminster, Bridport, Dorchester and Sherborne. On April 1, 2019, the district became part of the new Dorset Unitary Authority .
