Christel Wegner (born November 16, 1947 in Hamburg-Moorburg ) is a German politician of the German Communist Party (DKP). From 2008 to 2013 she was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament . She was elected via the electoral list of the party Die Linke . In the same year she was expelled from their parliamentary group after defending the construction of the Berlin Wall and speaking out in favor of reintroducing an organ like the GDR State Security to help establish a new form of society.

Life

Wegner comes from a communist family and is a trained nurse . From 1968 to 1990 she worked in this profession at the Buchholz district hospital in Nordheide , where she was a member of the staff council and chairwoman of the staff council. From 1990 to 1992 she completed professional training to become a nursing manager and then from 1992 to 1993 she was head of department at the Lower Saxony State Hospital in Lüneburg. From 1994 to 2002 she was the head of nursing at the Buchholz district hospital; she retired in December 2007.

Political offices

Wegner is a board member of the DKP in Lower Saxony , to which she has belonged since the party was founded in 1968. In the state election in Lower Saxony in 2008 , she moved into the state parliament via the state list of the Left as a member of the state parliament, but on February 18, 2008, in a crisis meeting , she excluded the left faction by unanimous decision after Wegner had the construction of the Berlin Wall and the GDR state security had defended. Wegner is also a member of the ver.di trade union and the association of those persecuted by the Nazi regime - Association of Antifascists (VVN-BdA).

Political positions and impact

Wegner became known nationwide in February 2008 when he asked the ARD magazine Panorama for a different form of society to be brought about by a revolutionary upheaval, with “deposition of capital” and “ socialization of the means of production ”. In order to protect itself against “ reactionary forces ” “ softening from within ”, this state should also protect itself by reintroducing a secret service . According to the Panorama press release, which caused a lot of media coverage, Wegner was referring to an organ similar to the GDR Ministry for State Security . Regarding the difference between its political positions and the Left Party, Wegner said in the same interview: “The Left wants to achieve changes through reforms, and we are of the opinion that this is not enough. We want society to be restructured. ”Wegner also defended the construction of the Berlin Wall and generally acknowledged“ unlimited solidarity ”with“ comrades who have spent their whole lives building a different form of society ”. The conversation was published in excerpts by the ARD.

As a result of her interview, Wegner experienced criticism and calls for resignation from politicians from all parties represented in the Bundestag, including the left. Hubertus Heil , then General Secretary of the SPD, called Wegner's statement "anti-democratic and historically forgotten". The party executive of the Left distanced itself from the content of Wegner's statements. The Lower Saxony parliamentary group leader of the Left Kreszentia Flauger advised Wegner to resign from her state parliament mandate. Gregor Gysi also criticized the West German party associations for their collaboration with the DKP in the state elections in Lower Saxony, Hesse and Hamburg and suspected Wegner of being an agent provocateur for the protection of the constitution . Klaus Ernst , then vice chairman of the Left in the Bundestag, described the DKP as a “ sect ”. The Lower Saxony parliamentary group of the Left excluded Wegner on February 18, 2008, because Wegner violated an agreement according to which she had to return her parliamentary mandate as soon as fundamental differences arise with the programmatic orientation of the left. Christel Wegner, however, did not give up her mandate, contrary to the demands for resignation and remained in parliament as a non-attached member until the end of the 2013 legislative period.

In a statement, Christel Wegner accused Panorama of a misleading cut and stated that she did not want, as Panorama and the press put it, “the Stasi back”. All she said was that every state had a secret service and of course this also applied to a socialist state. Wegner's position was largely viewed as inadequate within the left, but at the same time media coverage was also criticized. So described z. B. Jürgen Reents the media response to the Panorama press release as "joy of indignation". In the journal Konkret she commented on the events in an interview with Georg Fülberth .

Parliamentary activities

On December 17, 2008, your minor inquiry of July 4, 2008 on the shipment of lye from the Asse research mine was published as a state parliamentary document. This inquiry made the fact public that lye from the mine had been brought to closed mines of K + S AG for years.

Sentenced for public incitement to criminal offenses

On September 26, 2012, the majority of the Lower Saxony state parliament lifted Wegner's immunity. This cleared the way for a trial against the MPs, in which she was charged with a call to " gravel Castor ". The faction on the left voted against the waiver of immunity. The public prosecutor's office in Lüneburg had offered to discontinue the proceedings against payment of 500 euros. Wegner refused this. In April 2013, like Inge Höger and Sevim Dağdelen, she was sentenced to a fine for publicly inciting criminal offenses .
