Christian Gerthsen (born November 21, 1894 in Hörup on Alsen , German Empire , † December 8, 1956 in Karlsruhe ) was a German physicist . He is best known as the author of the textbook Gerthsen Physik .

Life

From 1913 to 1914 Gerthsen studied at the University of Heidelberg and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . During the First World War he did military service, from 1919 to 1920 he continued his studies at the University of Göttingen and from 1920 at the University of Kiel . He did his doctorate there in 1922 under Walther Kossel with a thesis on the electrostatic interpretation of the properties of solutions and remained his assistant until 1930. In 1929 the habilitation followed with a thesis on testing the field profile on the K-shell using H-rays . He then went to the University of Tübingen as a private lecturer .

In 1932 he went to the University of Giessen , where he was appointed full professor of experimental physics . In 1939 he moved to the University of Berlin , where he became director of the I. Physics Institute. In addition, Gerthsen was head of the four-year plan institute No. 32 for atomic research in Berlin KW-7, Reichstagufer 7-8.

His basic course book, which is now considered the standard textbook, was created from the transcripts of his lectures in 1946/47 in Berlin and appeared for the first time in 1948. (It has since been updated by other authors in more than 20 editions.) In the same year Gerthsen went to the TH Karlsruhe , where he Headed the reconstruction of the physics department and the physics institute after the Second World War . In the 1950s he suggested building a modern physics classroom. He remained director of the institute until his death in 1956. Since 1951 he was a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

In Giessen, Gerthsen studied atomic collision processes . Among other things, he looked at the excitation of nuclear reactions and the emission of X-rays . He came up with the idea of the tandem accelerator .

Later he carried out scattering experiments with charged particles. He was one of the first to use the Geiger-Müller counter tube to evaluate them . He was able to experimentally prove the exchange effect predicted by quantum mechanics .
