Franz Himstedt

Franz Himstedt (born July 12, 1852 in Braunschweig , † January 7, 1933 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German physicist .

life and work

Himstedt attended the Günther private institute in Braunschweig from 1864 to 1868 and the Martino-Katharineum there from 1869 to 1872 . After studying physics, he received his doctorate in 1875 in Göttingen under Eduard Riecke . He then worked for two years as a teacher at his former grammar school in Braunschweig, then completed his habilitation at the University of Göttingen and became a private lecturer there in 1878. Two years later he moved to the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , where he later took over a chair. After moving to the University of Gießen to succeed Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen , he finally returned to Freiburg in 1895. During his teaching activity he had his villa built at Gartenstrasse 22 in Giessen according to the plans of the Giessen architect Hans Meyer .

His research areas were mainly electrodynamics and electrostatics . From 1922 to 1924 he was President of the German Physical Society . In 1888 Himstedt was appointed a member of the Leopoldina . From 1909 he was an extraordinary member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

He was a privy councilor and received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Karlsruhe in 1922.
