Christian Gottlob Immanuel Lorenz (born January 25, 1804 in Hüttengrund , † July 31, 1873 in Grimma ) was a German philologist , educator and historian . Lorenz wrote the first comprehensive chronicle (1867–1870) of the city of Grimma, for which he became its honorary citizen and a street in the old town bears his name.

Life

Christian Gottlob Lorenz visited the Lyceum in his hometown and in 1819, at the age of 15, came to the state school in Grimma (also called Moldanum), which he attended from 1819 to 1824. On October 20, 1824 he was enrolled as a student of Protestant theology at the University of Leipzig . But classical philology fascinated him more, and so he switched and received his doctorate in this subject in 1828. Lorenz preferred for himself instead of Dr. phil. the old title of Magister , which is why many of his later works have the abbreviation "M." in front of his name.

First he worked as a "Vespers Preacher" at the University Church in Leipzig and published his first publication, an edition of Cicero's speeches, in the Teubner Verlag . In 1831 Lorenz returned to the Moldanum - as a teacher of Latin and Greek, and later also of history and geography. This was followed by 33 years of professional experience at this school, of which he became deputy principal in 1843. In March 1864, Lorenz took early retirement for health reasons.

Teacher, historian, chronicler

The sources unanimously report that Lorenz was an equally respected and popular teacher with a lot of understanding for and a lot of sympathy from the students. Probably in connection with the preparations for the 300th anniversary of the state school in 1850, Lorenz dealt with the school and city history with increasing intensity and published the following books:

  • History of the city of Grimma in the Kingdom of Saxony, historically described (1,650 pages, Dyk'sche Buchhandlung , 3 volumes published between 1867 and 1870)
  • The little guide through Grimma and the surrounding area (1867)
  • In memory of Georg Joachim Göschen (1861)
  • Document book of the city of Grimma and the Nimbschen monastery . (1860s)
  • Report on the founding and opening of the Landesschule zu Grimma in 1550, its external circumstances and fate during its existence and the celebrations of the same in 1650, 1750 and 1850 (1850)
  • Grimmenser album, list of all students of the Royal State School in Grimma from its opening to the third jubilee (= list of all students from 1550 to 1850)

as well as collaboration on the volumes of the Codex Diplomaticus Saxoniae Regiae . The handwritten estate of Christian Gottlob Lorenz is in the Leipzig State Archives .

Appreciation

Lorenz received the title of professor in 1843 due to the proven constant scientific work that he performed in addition to his teaching activities.

Lorenz was awarded honorary citizenship by the city of Grimma for his services . He lived in Grimma at 15 Rittergasse; In the year of his death in 1873, the city renamed Rittergasse Lorenzstrasse - and it still bears this name today. At house number 15 there is also a memorial plaque with the inscription “Professor Gottlob Lorenz, author of the chronicle of our city, lived and died here”.

On the occasion of the 200th birthday of Christian Gottlob Lorenz in 2004, a ceremony was held at the St. Augustin grammar school and a memorial hour was held at the grave of Christian Gottlob Lorenz in the Grimma cemetery. In this context, the Geschichts- und Altertumsverein zu Grimma eV published a commemorative publication with the celebratory speech by the association's chairman, Dipl.-Ethn. Rudolf Priemer to Christian Gottlob Lorenz.
