Christian Gryphius (born September 29, 1649 in Fraustadt , today Wschowa ; † March 6, 1706 in Breslau ) was a German pedagogue and school dramatist .

Life

Shortly after the end of the Thirty Years' War , Christian was born in Fraustadt as the eldest son of the great Baroque poet Andreas Gryphius and his wife Rosina, née Deutschländer. In contrast to other sons of great fathers, he avoided following in his father's footsteps, but instead created his own career in which, according to Erdmann Neumeister, he “rose even higher than his noble father”. He completed a philological degree in Gotha , Jena and Strasbourg and in 1674 was appointed professor for Greek and Latin at the Elisabethgymnasium in Breslau , where he achieved a high reputation as a teacher in twelve years. In 1686 he followed a call as rector of the Maria Magdalenen- Grammar school , where he also took over the management of the library from 1699.

In addition to occasional poems, a number of extensive learned works and school dramas were created here. As editor , he edited an increased new edition of the works of his father Andreas Gryphius as well as the first complete edition of the works of the baroque poet Hans Assmann Freiherr von Abschatz . A far-reaching exchange of letters connected him with many scholars of his time. He died in Wroclaw in 1706 until he was in office.
