Christian Kellens

Christian Kellens (* 18th January 1925 in Andenne ; † 31 December 2019 ) was a Belgian musicians of modern jazz ( trumpet , bass trombone , baritone horn , tuba ).

Live and act

Kellens first learned the harmonica , from 1945 autodidactically the trombone. In 1949 and 1951 he was part of Jack Sels ' band , with whom the first recordings were made. He then played with Jack Diéval , Bobby Jaspar , Jean-Pierre Sasson , Martial Solal and Lalo Schifrin (1954), in the following years with Henri Renaud , Carlo Bohländer , Fred Bunge and Aimé Barelli , before joining the orchestra in 1957 and 1958 Kurt Edelhagen became. In 1958 he also played at the Newport Jazz Festival and then worked for Sels, Diéval and Fats Sadi . In 1960 and 1961 he was part of the Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland octet . Then he married in Argentina , where he led his own quintet, but also recorded with Oscar Alemán , Marito Consentino, Jorge Anders and Alberto Favero. He later returned to Belgium.

Kellens can be heard on albums with Edelhagen, Christian Chevallier ( Formidable , 1955) of the Newport International Band, Karl Drewo , the Kenny Clarke / Francy Boland Big Band ( Now Hear Our Meanin ' 1961, 1963) and Jean-Luc Ponty . In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in 33 recording sessions between 1951 and 1977.
