life and work
Mølsted was the son of the shipbuilder and fisherman Andreas Adolf Nikolaj Mølsted (1839-1893) and his wife Ane Hans-Nielsdatter (1830-1905). He received his first training in Copenhagen in 1879 at the School of the Technical Society ( Det tekniske Selskabs Skole ). In the same year he made a sea voyage on the frigate Jylland to England, Madeira and Russia (St. Petersburg). After his return he began in 1880 to study at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen, which he graduated in 1885 with a diploma. His teachers were u. a. Frederik Vermehren , Jørgen Roed , Julius Exner , Niels Simonsen and Carl Bloch . During this time study trips took him to Paris in 1880 and to London in 1882 .
Mølsted exhibited for the first time in 1884 at the December exhibition in Charlottenborg Palace and was then regularly represented with his works at the spring exhibitions. Mølsted painted motifs of the coast around Copenhagen and Jutland, some with seafarers and fishermen as accessories. He also painted large battle pictures of historical content as well as genre pictures in old age. He was a board member of the artists' association since 1904.
Mølsted was married to Ingine Dorothea (Thea) Svendsen (1862–1948) since October 20, 1891, and the couple had three daughters. Mølsted died in his hometown in 1930, he was buried on Dragør Kirkegård.
In 1974 the painter's studio was opened as a museum in his hometown Dragør, it is part of the Amager Museum and shows a selection of his works of art.
