Christian Roos (zoologist)

Christian Roos (born October 29, 1972 in Munich ) is a German zoologist and primatologist .

Life

After his Abitur at the science school Unterhaching in 1993 graduated Roos Civilian Service in the Department of Pediatric Genetics of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich . From 1995 he studied biology at the Technical University of Munich , where he specialized in molecular genetics . With a diploma thesis on the molecular evolution of the colobus and colobus monkeys , he graduated as a biologist with an overall grade of "very good" in 2000. In 2003 he was awarded the dissertation Molecular evolution of prosimians (Strepsirrhini) under the direction of Hans Zischler to Dr. rer. nat. PhD at the Technical University of Munich. For this he received the advancement award of the German Primate Center in Göttingen for young scientists in 2004 . From 2004 to 2007 he completed his post-doc phase at the German Primate Center. During this time he dealt on the one hand with the protection of species and the evolution of langurs and gibbons in Indochina and on the other hand was responsible for the maintenance of the gene database of the German Primate Center. Since 2008 he has been a senior scientist at the German Primate Center. In 2013, with the habilitation thesis Molecular Phylogeny of Living Primates, he was authorized to teach as a private lecturer in zoology at the Faculty of Biology and Psychology of the Georg-August University in Göttingen .

Roos' main research interests are evolution , phylogeography , taxonomy , population genetics and the conservation of primates.

Roos was the first descriptions of the types tianxing Hoolock , Pongo tapanuliensis , Melogale cucphuongensis , annamensis Nomascus , Trachypithecus selangorensis , Avahi peyrierasi , Avahi meridionalis , Avahi ramanantsoavani , Lepilemur aeeclis , Lepilemur randrianasoloi , Lepilemur sahamalazensis , mittermeieri Lepilemur , Microcebus lehilahytsara and Mirza zaza involved . In 2013 he co-authored the family chapters on the vervet monkey relatives and the gibbons in the third volume of the Handbook of the Mammals of the World .

In 2020 Roos took part in the ZDF documentary Terra X : Adventure Vietnam .
