Carl Christian Tscherning (born May 21, 1942 in Copenhagen ; † October 24, 2014 in Copenhagen) was a Danish geodesist and university professor. In geodesy he is considered to be a pioneer for modern mathematical methods, especially for the precise determination of the terrestrial gravity field .

Life

Tscherning studied mathematics and geodesy from 1962-70 and became known early on in specialist circles when, after research collaborations in Ohio , with Helmut Moritz (Berlin / Graz) and at the DGFI Munich, he developed the global harmonic earth models by RH Rapp et al . introduced into geoid determination . The geophysical researcher was also - following H. Moritz (1980) - one of the first users of the new collocation method for the combined processing of different data sources.

He was a sought-after speaker and visiting professor , who repeatedly amazes with his original passages in his lectures. He received numerous honors and a few appointments at other universities, but found the best conditions for him at the University of Copenhagen (1977-88 lecturer for physical geodesy ) and at the Danish Niels Bohr Institute . Tscherning has been head of the research group “Meteorologi, Oceanografi, Geodæsi” there since 2005 , and group leader (dean) for “ Planet and geofysics ” since July 2007 .

In addition to his work in the field of mathematical and higher geodesy , Tscherning also dealt with topics such as data management or with more general future aspects of scientific research.

Tscherning has chaired several symposia and several commissions and special study groups of the International Union for Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) and the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) over the past decades . He also performed a number of functions in the American AGU cooperation (AGU: American Geophysical Union ). From 1987 to 1995 he was secretary for the International Geoid Commission and has been a member of the GOCE project team of ESA ( Mission Advisory Board for the newly developed satellite gradiometry ) for several years .

Christian Tscherning has written around 220 specialist publications to date , including numerous reports for various scientific bodies. He was u. a. Received the Ole Rømer Prize and the Weikko Heiskanen Award from the University of Ohio in 1976, and most recently in 2007 with the Levallois Medal from the IAG. In 1991 he was elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and in 1999 an Associate of the British Royal Astronomical Society . He also made important contributions to the SNSF , ESA and NATO's research areas . This includes working on satellite projects such as Envisat , GEOSONAR and GOCE .
