Christian Reinhold Wanninger (born September 12, 1981 in Ingolstadt ) is a former German ski racer . He started in the slalom and giant slalom disciplines . In his career, which was interrupted several times by injuries, he twice achieved second place in German championships, two top 10 results in the European Cup and several victories in FIS races . In the World Cup , however, he remained without points in his five starts. In February 2003, Wanninger took part in the World Championships in St. Moritz . He has been a trainer since 2008.
Career
Wanninger contested his first FIS races in December 1996 . In January 1999 he reached the first podium places in the giant slaloms of Flumserberg and Garmisch-Partenkirchen and in February of the same year he took part in a European Cup race for the first time . He also starts in the giant slalom at the Junior World Championships in 1999 , but failed in the second round.
After an injury in January 2000, Wanninger had to take a break for almost a year. At the Junior World Championship in 2001 he finished 33rd in the giant slalom, 3.65 seconds behind. In January 2002 he celebrated his first victories in FIS races in the two slaloms in Berchtesgaden . Shortly afterwards he took 29th place in the giant slalom in Oberjoch, the first points in the European Cup and on February 3, 2002 he was allowed to start in the World Cup for the first time . In the giant slalom in St. Moritz , however, he clearly failed due to qualification for the second round. In the 2002/03 season he qualified for the 2003 World Championships in St. Moritz, where he achieved 7.56 seconds in the giant slalom with several top 10 results in FIS races and a 14th place in the European Cup giant slalom from Hermagor Behind the winner Bode Miller immediately before his team mate Felix Neureuther took 34th place and after a failure by Andreas Ertl was at least the best German.
On September 30, 2003, Wanninger suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his left knee while training on the Pitztal Glacier , which is why he was unable to take part in any races for the entire next winter. At the beginning of the 2004/05 season he contested his second World Cup race in Sölden , but fell out after a goal error in the first round. The next serious injury followed in December 2004, which is why he had to take a break for almost a year and only returned to competition in December 2005. At the beginning of February 2006 he achieved his first victory in an FIS race in four years and shortly afterwards he achieved his best European Cup result with 13th place in the giant slalom in La Molina . On February 25, 2007, Wanninger came in the giant slalom of Garmisch-Partenkirchen for his third World Cup appearance, but again he was eliminated after a goal mistake in the first run. In March 2007 he was German runner-up in giant slalom behind Daniel Fischer .
In the 2007/08 season, Wanninger achieved his first and only top 10 results in the European Cup. At the start of the season he finished eighth in the indoor slalom in Landgraaf and in February he reached seventh place in the slalom in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. He made two appearances in the World Cup this winter. While he missed the qualification for the second run in the Wengen slalom in January , he was able to qualify for the second run for the first time on February 9, 2008 in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen slalom as 30th of the first run. In the second round, however, after a serious mistake, he lost over half a minute, which is why he only finished the race in 27th and last place and received no World Cup points due to the large time lag. Wanninger achieved his last success at the German championships in March 2008 when he was runner-up in the German slalom behind Felix Neureuther. In December 2008 he announced his retirement from active ski racing and took over his first coaching activities. At the moment (2010) he is coaching the men’s Oberland national team.
