Christian von Frisch

Christian Frisch , from 1870 von Frisch , (born November 5, 1807 in Stuttgart ; † March 29, 1881 ibid) was a German educator, scholar and politician.

Life

Christian Frisch was born in Stuttgart as the son of a regional finance councilor. After attending grammar school and the Evangelical Seminary in Blaubeuren, he studied theology in Tübingen . He later switched to studying mathematics and took his exams in Erlangen . In Tübingen he joined the Old Tübinger Burschenschaft (later Germania Tübingen ) in 1826 and the Tübingen Feuerreitern in 1828, and in Erlangen in 1830 the Germania Erlangen fraternity .

In 1833 he became a teacher at the Realanstalt Stuttgart, and in 1862 he was finally rector of the school. The interest in astronomy led him to study Johannes Kepler . He later published his works and campaigned for a monument to Kepler in Weil der Stadt . He became head of the Stuttgart Museum Society and the Royal in 1868 with the Knight's Cross Class of Frederick the Order , in 1870 with the Knight's Cross Class of the Order of the Württemberg Crown honored and the personal nobility raised. The University of Tübingen awarded him two honorary doctorates , one he received in 1858 from the Philosophical Faculty for the development of secondary schools in Württemberg, the other in 1870 for the publication of the collected works of the astronomer Johannes Kepler. In 1881 the scholar and politician died single in Stuttgart.

politics

Even as a student, Frisch was a political person, he was enthusiastic about German unification and took part in the revolution of 1848/49 . He was chairman of the Vaterländischer Hauptverein in Stuttgart and became a member of the German National Assembly in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt. Frisch remained as one of the few members of parliament until the " rump parliament " in Stuttgart was broken up in June 1849. After that, he became a member of the first constitutional revision of the state assembly of Württemberg. After the founding of the Reich, he became a member of the Reichstag for six years as a national liberal . In the Reichstag he represented the constituency of Württemberg 8 ( Freudenstadt , Horb , Oberndorf , Sulz ). His election was not without controversy within the National Liberal Party , since a National Liberal opponent was nominated in the Reichstag elections in 1871 and in 1874 two National Liberal opponents even ran against him.

Frisch's monumental life achievement is the publication of the collected works of Johannes Kepler in more than 30 years of work, alone, with many difficulties and with great personal, also financial commitment. At the beginning of the 18th century, Michael Gottlieb Hansch had failed because of this. The first volume appeared in 1858, and the last volume 8, part 2, in 1871 on Kepler's 300th birthday, totaling more than 6,200 printed pages. Most of Kepler's estate, which was stored in the Russian main observatory in Pulkovo , was made accessible to him through diplomatic relations between Württemberg and Russia. Frisch transcribed Kepler's illegible handwriting, re-edited the printed texts and provided the works with introductions and notes, and supplemented them with a biography of Kepler, all in Latin. The edition was decisive up to the new edition of Kepler's collected works, begun by Max Caspar and Walther von Dyck , which appeared from 1937–2017 with the support of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
