The Christkirche ( Danish : Kristkirke ) is the largest and most important church in Tønder in southern Denmark . It is one of the few Gothic churches that were built for Protestant services from the start . This is also expressed in the name, since the Reformation ended the cult of saints .

history

In the Middle Ages there were two churches in Tønder, namely St. Laurentius and St. Nicolai, today's Christian church. The Franciscans also owned a monastery church. The Nicolaikirche was built around 1350, but in 1591 it was so dilapidated and narrow that it was demolished. Only the medieval tower, which was attached to the church around 1520, remained. The new church was added to this tower on April 30, 1591. Contributed to the financing, follow the 1593 affixed by the senior pastor and provost Andreas Thomaeus dedication plaque, which is still located in the left aisle of the church, to a considerable extent of the elect Archbishop Johann Adolph of Bremen at the same time Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf was . The building was completed on July 25, 1592 and consecrated on October 4.

From 1729 to 1735 Hans Adolph Brorson - later a bishop and one of the greatest hymn poets in Scandinavia - was pastor of the church.

description

From the North Sea you can see its 48 meter high tower, the only remnant of the previous church of St. Nikolai.

Although the Renaissance dominated the region as early as 1530, the church was largely built in the style of a medieval town church. The room layout is completely inspired by the Middle Ages. The nave and choir were built in brick in monastery format , and only the cross bracing used represents the construction technology that was still relatively new at the time, while the higher and wider central nave is still separated from the aisles by arcades . The east-facing choir is of the same height as the central nave. Pointed arch windows, buttresses and the shape of the roof are still Gothic . However, the belt arches and the vaults over the central nave no longer strive skyward.

In the church you will find a singing gallery, which gives the visitor the impression of a choir screen, especially since 1894 with the restoration of the church, the condition before the installation of the singers import should be restored. The gallery dates from 1623 and offers bible motifs by a local painter.

The pulpit and stalls are from the 16th century. The donor had a picture of his deceased daughter incorporated into the altar panel created in 1695 .

organ

The organ was built in 1945 by the organ builder Th. Frobenius & Co. The organ case comes from Johan Heide and was created in the 18th century. The slider chests -instrument has 37 registers on three manuals and pedal .
