Christoph Eidens

Christoph Eidens (born June 4, 1958 in Duisburg , † February 2, 2005 in Cologne ) was a German jazz vibraphonist .


Eidens first played guitar and piano before switching to the vibraphone. He studied percussion at the Musikhochschule Dortmund with a focus on mallet percussion . During guest appearances in the USA he performed a. a. with Andy Middleton , Randy Brecker , Ron McClure and Steve Rudolph . He toured with groups like Supersession , Mallet Madness (with Tony Miceli ), Tim Isfort Orchestra and the WDR Big Band Köln and made recordings with George Gruntz , Eckard Koltermann , Claudio Puntin , Ack van Rooyen and Peter Fessler . He also led a trio with bassist Martin Gjakonovski and drummer Felix Astor .

In 1998 his album Cameroon Dance was released (with Danny Gottlieb , Andy Middleton, Dietmar Fuhr , Ted Kumpel , Norbert Scholly , Heinz Hox and Catherine Birrer ). With the group Tropic Ville (with Hans Steinmeier , Felix Petry , Ron van Stratum , Renis Mendoza and Martin Scheer ), the album was ChaChaBlue . As one of the founders of the Cologne Jazz Association , an organization of Cologne jazz musicians, for many years he was considered "one of the central personalities of the Cologne jazz scene."

Eidens died in 2005 after a long and serious illness at the age of 46. His grave is in Cologne's north cemetery (hall 5a).
