Christoph Engelhardt (born August 27, 1965 in Göttingen ) is a German physicist, analyst and social entrepreneur . He became known as an expert in the controversy surrounding the Stuttgart 21 station project .

Life and work

Engelhardt studied physics at the Technical University of Munich and received his doctorate in 1998 with a thesis in semiconductor physics . Among other things, he worked as a corporate strategist at Siemens AG . Engelhardt is the initiator of the fact check platform WikiReal.org and the founder and managing director of WikiReal gGmbH. Engelhardt is best known as a professional critic of the Stuttgart 21 project and has recently also been critical of the 2nd main line in Munich .

Engelhardt is a member of the expert group Bürgerbahn instead of Börsenbahn and works in the working group on rail transport at the Munich Forum . He lives in Munich, is married and has three children.

Criticism of the Stuttgart 21 project

Engelhardt was an expert in the "stress test presentation" with concierge Heiner Geißler , in numerous media publications he was quoted on the shortcomings of the project, which from his point of view and according to the results on the fact check platform exist: These are above all the poor performance of the Underground station, the undersizing for pedestrians, inadequate fire protection, the dangerously excessive track inclination and the significantly increased risk of flooding due to the underground station.

Engelhardt appeared on the topics as an expert before the Administrative Court of Baden-Württemberg , in planning approval procedures, for the SÖS / Linke parliamentary group of the Stuttgart municipal council, the Die Linke parliamentary group of the Bundestag and for the alliance against Stuttgart 21 . He was one of the critics who Prime Minister Kretschmann invited to a debate on February 9, 2012. In the program “ Mario Barth Reveals! “On October 7, 2015, Engelhardt was asked about the technical criticisms of the underground station.

In 2011 Engelhardt justified his criticism of the efficiency of the underground station with cross-comparisons with stations that were already in operation. Large German through stations, which, according to the timetable, count more than 4 trains per hour and track during rush hour, tended to be unpunctual. The significantly higher performance expectations at Stuttgart 21 by DB Netz AG with 6 trains per hour can only be represented on paper because of unrealistic assumptions and methodological errors. Engelhardt, for example, criticized the fact that the stress test at Stuttgart 21 was based on too short a minimum stopping time and that the delays shown in the simulation were cut to uncritical values. He last argued in 2017 that these points of criticism had never been invalidated by DB AG, but rather had been confirmed by experts.

In 2014 Engelhardt criticized that the fire protection in the underground station was not working. Four trains per platform are planned in the operating programs, but evacuation has only been checked for two trains per platform. Either the station cannot provide the required service or fire protection is not guaranteed. In 2018 Engelhardt also criticized the fire protection in the Stuttgart 21 tunnels, saying that they were "the most dangerous new tunnels in Europe".

On March 16, 2016, Engelhardt appeared as an expert in the Committee on Transport and Digital Infrastructure of the Bundestag on the question of whether the maximum longitudinal inclination of platform tracks should be limited in Germany in the future. With a pushchair rolling onto the track in Ingolstadt Nord, he showed that the measures taken by Deutsche Bahn to ensure the same level of safety as on the level platform fail in practice.

In 2018 Engelhardt and Dipl.-Ing. Hans Heydemann the significantly increased risk of flooding from the S21 underground station. The wall of the station roof dammed the water in sudden heavy rain until it flooded the underground shopping arcade, underground and S-Bahn stations as well as the underground station, which could endanger the life and limb of hundreds of people. In addition, the underground station and its inlet tunnels would be flooded as planned if the groundwater increased. In both cases, there is a risk of considerable damage, especially economically, as a result of the months-long closures.
