Christoph Gewold
Christoph Gewold or Gewald (also Geboldt ; * October 10, 1556 in Amberg ; † June 17, 1621 in Ingolstadt ) was a German lawyer and historian .
Life
Gewold converted to Roman Catholicism in 1581 . In 1583 he began studying law at the University of Ingolstadt . Since no doctorates were undertaken at the Ingolstadt Law Faculty during this time , it is unclear where he was awarded a Dr. iur. utr. received his doctorate. In 1588 he came to the Bavarian court in Munich as Secretary of the Court of Justice for court and legal matters, with an appointment on May 11, 1587, was appointed Court Counselor in 1591 and real Court Counselor in 1594, and in 1595 received the position of Privy Council Secretary and the board of directors of the ducal archives. With the financial support of Duke Maximilian , he was able to purchase a house in Munich in 1600.
Gewold resigned from all offices in 1617 and moved back to Ingolstadt. The ducal court also helped with the sale of the house. In Ingolstadt he mainly devoted himself to his historical, political and scientific work, some of which he wrote on behalf of the Duke. In addition, he was often called to Munich for consultations.
The epitaph of Gewold, his wife and daughter is on the aisle of the north side of the Franciscan Church in Ingolstadt, a work that is attributed to the Dutch-German Renaissance sculptor Hubert Gerhard .
The Gewoldstrasse in Ingolstadt is named after him.
