Christoph Traugott Delius (* 1728 in Wallhausen (Helme) ; † January 21, 1779 in Florence ) was a German mining scientist.

Life

Delius' father was a land commissioner. After attending grammar schools in Quedlinburg and Magdeburg , he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg on March 17, 1749 . Here he originally wanted to study law, but then turned to mathematical and scientific studies. For financial reasons, he temporarily entered military service.

Then Delius went to Vienna , where he converted to the Catholic faith. In Schemnitz he studied mining science, where he was able to benefit from his mathematical knowledge. In 1756 he took over the position of a mine surveyor in the Banat , in 1761 he became a mountain administrator , in 1764 a chief mining administrator and assessor of the mining college and in 1770 professor of mining science and mining cameralistics at the Bergakademie Schemnitz . With that he had become imperial councilor and assessor in the Obrist-Kammergrafenamt at the same time.

In 1772 Delius was called to Vienna, where he took part in the establishment of the mining and coinage department. At the same time he was appointed real councilor and consultant in mining and coin matters. After a creative life he tried to improve his health by taking cures in Italy , but died during this trip in Florence.

Delius dealt mainly with mining and metallurgy in his work. In 1778 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
