The Christ Church is a Protestant church in the district of Plittersdorf the Bonn city district Bad Godesberg . The church stands as a monument under monument protection .

history

The Christ Church was built in 1953 to designs by the architect Otto Bartning , who was particularly important for Protestant church building, with the assistance of Otto Dörzbach. Construction began on November 3, 1952, the foundation stone was laid on January 25, 1953. On November 29, the church was consecrated .

Architecture and equipment

The Christ Church is considered to be one of the most important of Bartning's post-war churches. The building is designed as a "winged church" so that four adjoining parish rooms can be used to expand the church if necessary. It is therefore equally suitable as a "celebration and weekday church". Accordingly, the church offers space for around 360 visitors for normal Sunday services and can be expanded to up to 850 seats on public holidays by opening the movable wooden folding walls, making it the largest Protestant church in Bad Godesberg.

The remarkable architecture directs the gaze to the open and light designed chancel: it is dominated by an atmospheric, eleven meter high quarry stone mosaic by the painter and sculptor Willi Sohl, which depicts the "Transfiguration of Christ". An eight meter high copper cross forms the center of the sanctuary. The baptismal bowl and the sacrament implements are from Prof. Dr. Rudolf Koch and were made by the Gotthold Schönwandt workshop in Nordeck / Gießen. The stand for the baptismal bowl was manufactured in 2002 by the art locksmith Heinz-Dieter Bastian based on a design by the Godesberg architect Wolfram Stolle. The pulpit is the work of the Cologne sculptor Jochem Pechau . Four cast bronze tablets with the symbols of the four evangelists rise above the pentagonal base , and above the inscription: "Watch and pray". A chandelier created in 2011 by the Godesberg artist Eberhard Koch represents a globe in a cubic shape, with Christ as the light of the world in its center. The four main meridians and circles of latitude form a cross at all points of contact. Since 2010, two modern wooden angel figures have been attached to the simple wooden side walls of the church.

The slender church tower with an open belfry is not connected to the church, but is clearly set off at an angle in front of the western side entrance of the church.

The Christ Church is the center of a community center. A large library was built on the southwest side of the church in 1972. The two-storey parish hall with sexton's apartment and a single-storey kindergarten (since 1955, rebuilt and expanded in 2013) and a youth room (1967, rebuilding 2013) adjoin in the longitudinal direction to the north . The parsonage and the family education center "Haus der Familie" (1965) with a multi-generation house are somewhat separated from it .

Organs and church music

From 1956 to 2018 the church had an organ by master organ builder Paul Ott . It was replaced in 2019 by an instrument by Claudius Winterhalter . Cantors of the Christ Church were Professor Friedrich Ernst Klaffke (1954–60), Dieter Kröker (1961–76), Ernst-Ulrich Scheler (1976–2008), Philipp Christ (2009), Michael Riedel (2010–2013), Barbara Dünne (since 2013).

In 2016 the parish commissioned the organ builder Claudius Winterhalter to build a new organ with 31 registers on 2 manuals and a pedal. The disposition was created in cooperation between the organ expert Manfred Schwartz and the organ building company. The Winterhalter organ was installed in autumn 2018 and inaugurated on Pentecost Sunday, June 9, 2019. The consecration concert on the same evening was played by Professor Johannes Geffert .

Ott organ (1956-2018)

The three-manual organ with 44 sounding stops and 3170 pipes by the organ builder Paul Ott was inaugurated on July 15, 1956. A special feature in organ building was the second reverse positive built into the gallery balustrade as a pedal reverse positive . In 2015, an expert report by the regional church determined that a restoration of the Ott organ did not make sense. The parish therefore decided to replace it with a new organ. The organ was dismantled in June 2018. It should be heard from 2020 in the Saint Antoine church in Lyon, France.
