Chronicle of a Death Forbidden is a film from 1987. It is based on the novel of the same name by the Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez .

action

Cristóbal Bedoya, also called "Cristo", is a doctor. After 27 years he is returning to his hometown, a small Colombian town on the banks of the Magdalena River. His best friend Santiago Nasar was murdered there 30 years ago. He speaks to witnesses of the time and the plot jumps back thirty years. A young, handsome and wealthy stranger, Bayardo San Román, moves to town. Little is known about him and the source of his wealth. Bayardo takes a look at the beautiful Ángela Vicario and immediately decides to marry her.

Ángela is not interested in his advances and gifts. When she tells him that the widower Xius' villa is her favorite house in town, he promptly buys it. Ángela still doesn't want to be bought, but her mother presses her and tells her that love can also be learned. Ángela is pushed to the wedding and has a lavish party.

On their wedding night, Bayardo discovers that Ángela is no longer a virgin and becomes angry. He brings her back to her parents. The mother beats Ángela until she mentions the name of the man who slept with her: Santiago Nasar. The unwritten laws of society require Ángela's twin brothers to kill Nasar.

The brothers Pablo and Pedro Vicario don't actually want to kill Santiago, but customs force them to do so. The murder is said to occur on the day the bishop visits the place. Everyone in town knows that the brothers are planning the murder. Both wait in Clotilde Armenta's shop, who gives them rum to drink to get them drunk and deter them from doing the crime. Nobody warns Santiago, after all, the place is divided into three parts: some believe the brothers are joking, others believe they are serious and they should be stopped, and the police are doing nothing.

Flora, Santiago's friend, is excited and appalled when she hears of the allegations and threats. She reproaches Santiago and yells that he deserves what is happening to him.

Santiago is eventually stabbed to death in the main square.

The charge is never proven, Santiago and Ángela were never seen together. However, Angela sticks to her version even 27 years after the murder. She had fallen in love with Bayardo after their wedding night and had written him love letters for decades, but he never answered them. Thirty years after the fact, he shows up with her and it remains to be seen whether they will both become a couple.

criticism

  • film-dienst : The film adaptation of the novel is more interested in the entertainment quality in the sense of a Hollywood melodrama than in dealing with the complex problems of violent morality or narrow-minded orthodoxy.

Further adaptation

The novel also found its way onto the screen in the Chinese adaptation A Blood Red Morning ( 1990 ).
