Charles Frederick "Chuck" Hughes (born March 2, 1943 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † October 24, 1971 in Detroit , Michigan ) was an American American football player on the position of the wide receiver . He is the only NFL player to die on the pitch while a game was in progress.

Early years

Hughes moved his family from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Texas at a young age , where he attended Abilene High School . He later went to the University of Texas at El Paso . In 2006 Hughes was inducted into the UTEP Athletics Hall of Fame.

NFL

Chuck Hughes was selected in the fourth round in the 1967 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles in 99th place. Here he played three seasons before he was traded to the Detroit Lions in 1970 . With both teams, he could not get beyond the role of a reserve player: In five years NFL he caught 15 passes for 262 yards .

On the 6th game day of the 1971 NFL season , the game Chicago Bears against the Detroit Lions took place at Tiger Stadium in Detroit , Michigan . Late in the game, the Lions were down 23:28 but had the ball. Hughes caught a 32-yard pass from quarterback Greg Landry for a new first down at the Bears 37-yard line. Three plays later, Landry threw a pass to tight end Charlie Sanders , which was not caught. Hughes wanted to run to the huddle , but collapsed at the 20-yard line, next to the Bears player Dick Butkus . He immediately noticed the seriousness of the situation and called the paramedics to the field. Hughes was taken to the Henry Ford Hospital , where he was found dead at 5:34 p.m.

Hughes was later found to have undiagnosed atherosclerosis , more precisely coronary thrombosis . He was buried in San Antonio , Texas .

His shirt number 85 has not been awarded by the Detroit Lions since then.
