Claudia Buthenhoff-Duffy (* 1959 in Stuttgart ) is a German film director and screenwriter .

Professional background

Claudia Buthenhoff-Duffy completed her training in jewelry design, worked as a carpenter, in the theater and studied psychology , philosophy and linguistics at the Free University of Berlin . She worked in assisting the disabled for a total of 25 years. In the 1990s she worked as a freelancer in radio journalism and was involved in the international campaign against the death penalty for the African-American journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal, who has been imprisoned since 1982 .

She graduated from the private Kaskeline Film Academy in Berlin with the short film Finding Finns (2002). With her project "Glasbruch" she took part in the Winter Academy of the Central German Media Funding in Gera and took part in script seminars with Keith Cunningham and Tom Schlesinger. She worked for the Berlin film distributor “Neue Visionen” in distribution and public relations. She translated and subtitled a number of films and completed advanced training as a creative producer at the Institute for Drama, Film and TV Professions .

In 2006 Buthenhoff-Duffy made the documentary short film Rosemary's Music - I remember Komeda about the Polish pianist and composer Krzysztof Komeda , who became known for his music for the Polański films Dance of the Vampires and Rosemary's Baby .

Awards

In 2008 she expanded the short film into the documentary film essay Komeda - A Soundtrack for a Life , for which she wrote the screenplay and directed. It was broadcast on Arte in 2010 and 2013 , and in 2011 it was screened at international film festivals such as Lubuskie Lato Filmowe in Poland, the International Film Festival in Milan, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival , the Golden Horse Film Festival in Taipei , the Festival of New Polish Films in Hanover and at the Jazzfest Berlin as part of the Berlin Festival . At the Biarritz Film Festival in 2010, the film was awarded the Silver FIPA in the category “Music, Theater, Dance” and was nominated for the Prix ​​Europa in the same year . In 2011 Claudia Buthenhoff-Duffy received the award for the best documentary film at the Polish film festival “Prowincjonalia”. The film has been shown at over 100 international festivals around the world.

Political activities

Claudia Buthenhoff-Duffy was a member of the Human Environment Animal Welfare party from 2013 . At the beginning of 2015, accompanied by her party colleague Bettina Jung, she went to Romania to work on a documentary film about the street dogs there on behalf of her party . As early as 2013, she had made the short documentary film The Killings - or How to Make a Law in Romania about how Romanian politicians and authorities deal with street dogs. At the end of 2015, she left the party. Claudia BD has been working on the connection between the associated violence against animals and people since 2012; she initiated an international scientific study and helped to carry out the first part (the making-the-link study). She has given several lectures on the subject in delegations in Brussels to EU parliamentarians and EU Commissioners.
