Claudia Maria Lücking-Michel (born February 4, 1962 in Dortmund ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From 2013 to 2017 she was a member of the German Bundestag . She is Vice President of the Central Committee of German Catholics .

Life and work

Claudia Lücking-Michel grew up in Menden (Sauerland) , where she graduated from high school in 1981. She then completed a nine-month social internship in a children's village in Rome, before starting to study Catholic theology and history at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster in 1982, continuing at the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem and the University of Tübingen. Lücking-Michel completed her studies in 1987 with a diploma in theology and in 1988 with the first state examination for teaching in Catholic religion and history. With a thesis on De Concordantia catholica des Nicolaus von Cues , she did her doctorate in 1991 under Peter Hünermann (Tübingen).

In 1991, Lücking-Michel became a consultant in the Cusanuswerk Episcopal Study Fund , the Catholic Church in Germany that promotes gifted students. From there, in 1997 she moved to the Misereor Episcopal Relief Organization in Aachen, where she became head of the department for educational and pastoral work. From 2004 to 2013 Lücking-Michel was general secretary of the Cusanuswerk.

Lücking-Michel is married to the Cologne Old Testament scholar Andreas Michel and has three children.

Political party

Lücking-Michel has been a member of the CDU since 2004 and has been deputy district chairwoman of the CDU Bonn since 2013. Since 2014 she has been the deputy chairwoman of the Federal Committee for Foreign, Security, Development and Human Rights Policy.

Member of the Bundestag

In 2013, Lücking-Michel ran for the CDU in the Bonn constituency as a candidate for the federal election and received 37.5% of the first votes . It was only 0.7 percentage points behind the incumbent member of the Bundestag and SPD candidate Ulrich Kelber . Lücking-Michel moved into the Bundestag via the state list of the CDU NRW.

She was a full member of the Committee on Education, Research and Technology Assessment and a full member of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development of the German Bundestag.

In addition, Lücking-Michel was deputy chairwoman of the women’s group in the CDU / CSU parliamentary group , belonged to the group’s workers’ group and was a member of the railway noise parliamentary group. She was a member of the Stephanuskreis and a member of the Kardinal-Höffner-Kreis of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, member of the German-Israeli parliamentary group , the German-Indian parliamentary group and the parliamentary group SADC states (Southern African Development Community).

Lücking-Michel is also chairwoman of the board of trustees of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH, a member of the board of trustees of the House of History Foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bonn, Leipzig, Berlin) and a deputy member of the board of trustees of the Federal Agency for Civic Education .

In addition, Lücking-Michel was significantly involved in 2006–2009 as chairwoman of the Federal Youth Board of Trustees and is part of the group of experts for developing an independent youth policy, which is based at the Federal Ministry for Families, Seniors, Women and Youth.

In the 2017 federal election , Lücking-Michel, who was on the CDU's 26th place in the list , could neither win the direct mandate nor move into the new Bundestag via the state list.

Church political engagement

Catholic German Women's Association

Since 1993 Lücking-Michel has been involved in various functions in the Catholic German Women's Association (KDFB) . In addition to her membership in the Theological Commission, she was head of the International Commission from 1995 and vice-president of the association from 1999–2008. She is currently a member of the foundation's board of trustees.

Central Committee of German Catholics

Lücking-Michel has been a member of the lay committee of the Catholic Church in Germany since 1997 and has been elected Vice President since 2005. In this role she was u. a. Member of the leadership of the 2nd Ecumenical Church Congress 2010 in Munich and the Catholic Congress 2012 in Mannheim.

At the ZdK, she continued her commitment to improving the situation of women and their representation in leadership positions in the Catholic Church. In addition, she placed a focus on issues relating to the interaction between lay people and clergy.

Working group for development aid

Since 2012 Lücking-Michel has been chairman of the board of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Entwicklungshilfe eV (AGEH) on a voluntary basis . The organization, based in Cologne, sees itself as a personnel service for German Catholics for development cooperation. She has been the managing director of AGEH since 2018.

ND being a Christian today

Lücking-Michel has been the head of the ND , a Catholic association based in Cologne, since 2014 .

Letter to Cardinal Marx

With eight other personalities - theologians and well-known Catholics - she addressed an open letter to Cardinal Reinhard Marx , which was published on February 3, 2019 in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung . The signatories called for a "new start with sexual morality" with a "reasonable and fair assessment of homosexuality", "real separation of powers" in the church and the removal of the excesses of the ordination office and its opening up to women. They appealed to the German Bishops' Conference to give diocesan priests the freedom to choose their way of life, "so that celibacy can again credibly refer to the kingdom of heaven".

Lücking-Michel is also a member of the board of trustees of Don Bosco Mondo eV, an aid organization committed to helping young people and children worldwide, and a member of the board of trustees of the aid organization Help - Help for Self-Help eV
