Claudio Pätz (born July 1, 1987 in Oberurdorf ) is a former Swiss curler . Most recently he played as second or third in Peter de Cruz's team .

Career

He began his international career as a substitute for Skip Manuel Ruch's Swiss team at the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2005, where he won the silver medal. At his first Junior World Championship in 2007 he was back as a substitute, this time with Skip Christian von Gunten . The Swiss came third and won the bronze medal. Pätz also took part in this competition in the two following years (as third and second) and was fifth and sixth.

His debut at the 2013 World Championships as third in Sven Michel's team ended in seventh place. At the 2014 World Cup , he played as a substitute for Peter de Cruz's team. The Swiss moved into the play-offs, lost there against the Swedes with Oskar Eriksson , but then won the game for 3rd place against the Canadians with Kevin Koe and won the bronze medal. Pätz then played again at the 2017 World Cup for Peter de Cruz, this time in third. Again the Swiss came into the play-offs and defeated the US team around John Shuster . In the semifinals they lost to Sweden with Niklas Edin , but then won the game for 3rd place against John Shuster.

To date, Pätz has participated in the European Championship six times (2011–2013 and 2015–2017). In 2013 , he and Skip Sven Michel became European champions by beating the Norwegians under Thomas Ulsrud in the final . This was followed by a silver medal in 2015 and two bronze medals in 2016 and 2017.

At the Mixed European Championship 2010 , Pätz led the Swiss team and won the silver medal.

Pätz was the third of the Swiss team to take part in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and finished eighth there. With third place at the 2017 World Cup, he scored the necessary points for the Olympic qualification with the Swiss team and took part with Peter de Cruz (Skip), Benoît Schwarz  (fourth), Valentin Tanner  (lead) and  Dominik Märki  (substitute) men's tournament at the  winter Olympics in 2018  in  Pyeongchang  part. After the Round Robin , the Swiss and the Great Britain came fourth. They won the tie-breaker against the British team around Kyle Smith , but were then defeated in the semifinals against Sweden with Skip Niklas Edin . In the game in third place they were able to defeat the Canadian team around Kevin Koe and win the bronze medal.

After the 2018 Olympic Games, Pätz announced his retirement from top-class curling.

Private life

The sister Alina Pätz is also a successful Swiss curler.
