Thomas Ulsrud (born October 21, 1971 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian curler . He plays the skip position .

Career

Ulsrud began his international career at the Junior World Championships in 1985 as a lead in Bjørn Ulshagen's Swedish team. In 1988 he played as a skip and won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championship .

In 1997 he played for the first time at a European Championship for adults and came fourth as Skip with his team. He won his first medal in this competition in 2002 when he came third.

He played his first world championship in 1998. He won the first medal in 2006 by winning the game for third place against Pete Fenson 's US team . At the European Championships in 2007 he won his first silver medal and in 2008 he came second. In the same year he won the bronze medal again at the World Cup , this time by winning the game for 3rd place against China with Wang Fengchun . The following year he won his third bronze medal in this competition; in the game for third place, he and his team defeated the Swiss team with Ralph Stöckli . At the European Championships in Aberdeen in 2009 Ulsrud won the bronze medal. The team was the first to complete the Round Robin , but then lost the Page Playoffs game against Sweden and the semi-finals against Scotland.

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he and his team won the silver medal. In the semifinals they were able to defeat the Swiss team around Skip Markus Eggler 7: 5. However , they lost the final against Canada with Skip Kevin Martin 3: 6. At the following World Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo 2010, he had to leave sick before the first game. As Skip he was represented by Torger Nergård .

Ulsrud won his first gold medal at an international competition at the 2010 European Championships in Champéry , where he defeated the team from Denmark around Skip Rasmus Stjerne 5-3 in the final. He was able to defend this title a year later at the 2011 European Championships in Moscow . The final against Sweden's team around Niklas Edin ended 7: 6 for Ulsrud and his team. In the following year this final pairing was repeated; but this time Edin prevailed. Ulsrud also won the silver medal in 2013 after losing to the Swiss team around Sven Michel in the final . In 2014 he again had to admit defeat to Niklas Edin in the final. He won his only gold medal that year at the World Championships in Beijing with an 8: 3 win over Sweden's team around Oskar Eriksson .

At the 2014 Winter Olympics , he failed to defend his Olympic silver medal. When he took part in the Olympics for the second time, he only finished fifth after the Round Robin and was therefore unable to move into the final round.

He also failed to defend his title at the 2015 World Cup . Although he made it back to the final with his team, he had to admit defeat to Niklas Edin's Swedish team. At the European Championships in 2015 , he won the bronze medal after three silver medals in a row. The 2016 World Cup was less successful; Ulsrud came with his team only in fifth place. Things went better at the European Championships in the same year, when he was able to move into the final again, but was once again defeated by Niklas Edin's Swedish team. At the European Championship 2017 he came into the game for 3rd place, but lost it against the Swiss team around Peter de Cruz . For the World Cup 2017 , however, he could not qualify for the first time in years; Steffen Walstad's team started for Norway .

With fourth place at the 2017 European Championships, Ulsrud fulfilled the nomination requirements of the Norwegian Association and represented Norway with his team in the men's competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . In his third participation in the Olympics, he and his teammates came in sixth after four wins and five defeats in the Round Robin and missed the finals.
