Claudio Paul Caniggia (born January 9, 1967 in Henderson, Buenos Aires Province ) is a former Argentine football player .

Career

society

Caniggia, conspicuous by his long blond hair, began his professional career in 1985 at River Plate . In 1988 he came to Europe and initially played for Hellas Verona alongside Thomas Berthold . After a year he moved to Atalanta Bergamo , where he stayed until 1992. In 1992 he moved to AS Roma . In March 1993, after the game against Naples, he was tested positive for cocaine during doping control and was banned for 13 months. From 1994 he played for Benfica Lisbon for a year and then went back to Argentina to the Boca Juniors . In 1997 he was embroiled in a cocaine scandal that resulted in a two-year ban.

In 1999 he tried a comeback at Atalanta Bergamo. But he only made his comeback when he moved to Scotland in 2000 and played for a year at FC Dundee , then more successfully from 2001 to 2003 with the Glasgow Rangers . From 2003 to February 2005 he let his career end in Qatar . On February 20, 2005, he finished his professional career, but in December of the same year he signed a contract until June 2006 with his new and old employer, Qatar SC.

National team

His best performance in the Argentine national team was at the 1990 World Cup in Italy , where he made it to the finals through his goals against Brazil and Italy . He was not allowed to take part in the final because of two yellow cards. In 1991 he was one of the top performers for the Argentines at the Copa America , which Argentina won; Caniggia scored two goals himself and prepared four. In 1992 Argentina won the King Fahd Cup , a forerunner to the Confederations Cup . Caniggia scored in the final.

He was in the Argentine squad for the 1994 World Cup in the USA and took part in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan , but was not used in any game. However, he received on June 12, 2002 in the game against Sweden - sitting on the bench - because of insulting the referee the red card.
