Political activity

Schmiedel joined the SPD in 1972. From 1975 to 1991 he was a member of the Marbach municipal council . From 1985 to 1994 and again since 2009 he was elected to the district council of the Ludwigsburg district. He has been a member of the regional assembly of the Stuttgart Region Association since 1994 . From 1994 to 2008 he was chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. Since 1992 he has been a member of the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg . Schmiedel represented constituency 12 (Ludwigsburg) and was the political group's spokesman for economic policy from 2000 to 2008. On January 10, 2008, he was elected chairman of the SPD parliamentary group by a narrow majority of 20 to 18 votes against MP Nils Schmid . He took over the office of Ute Vogt , who came under criticism from within the party after her election defeat in 2006. Schmiedel was the opposition leader before the SPD took over government together with the Greens after the state elections in 2011 .

In 2009, Claus Schmiedel was, alongside Nils Schmid and Hilde Mattheis, one of three candidates to succeed Ute Vogt as chairman of the SPD state association in Baden-Württemberg . Schmid won the member survey about it. Nils Schmid was then elected chairman of the state at the state party conference of the SPD in Karlsruhe on November 27, 2009 with 265 out of 299 votes from the delegates (88.63%).

After the formation of the state government made up of the Greens and the SPD in 2011, Schmiedel retained his position as parliamentary group leader. In the state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 2016 , Schmiedel lost his mandate and, at the beginning of the new legislative period, also the chairmanship of the parliamentary group.

Tax evasion proceedings

After Schmiedel had submitted his tax return for 2008 over four years too late, the Stuttgart public prosecutor opened criminal proceedings against him for tax evasion at the end of 2013. The state parliament approved the lifting of immunity in January 2014. In March 2014, the Stuttgart district court served Schmiedel with a penalty order amounting to 70 daily rates or 17,500 euros for exceeding the submission deadline.
