Clawes van der Sittow (* unknown in Mecklenburg ; † 1482 in Tallinn ) was an in Estonia active woodcarvers and painters .

Life

Cla (w) es van der Sittow was born in Mecklenburg . He was possibly of German or Dutch descent. In 1454 he moved to Reval (now Tallinn), where he married the daughter of a wealthy city citizen. Soon after his arrival in Reval, he became a member of the guild and set up his own workshop.

After the death of his first wife, he married the Finnish-Swedish merchant's daughter Margarethe Molner (or Mölnare). Their first child, the future painter Michel Sittow , was probably born in Reval in 1469 and was apprenticed to his father. The sons Clawes and Jasper followed.

Clawes van der Sittow was, among other things, from 1479 until his death in 1482 assessor of the influential Kanutilde . A relative was the goldsmith Hans Ryssenberch . The family achieved great prosperity and acquired two houses in Revaler Ritterstrasse in 1475 and 1479 .

Clawes van der Sittow was one of the most famous artists and artisans in Reval at the time. Famous works include the sculpture of the Virgin Mary at the gate on Kurzen Toomberg , the staircase from the lower town to Toomberg, as well as figures on the Tallinn Nikolaikirche and the armory on Ratsstrasse. His stained glass windows, the wind flags he made and his paintings in the Kanutilde were praised. Sittow also made window frames, pews and altars . Also known are a wooden tabernacle for the Nikolaikirche from 1478, the Tallinn Altar of Saint Anne (around 1460) and the wooden sculpture of Simon of Cyrene in the medieval church of Kaarma on the island of Saaremaa (probably mid-15th century).
